Tate Badge Design

Brief: You have been commissioned by the TATE galleries to produce a series of badges and presentation card which documents a period in Global Art history.  The designs must visually represent the art movement you chose.

Final badge design using the works of Andy Warhol: I decided on this because it represents my period in history and art movement best.

  • The Campbells Soup represents commercialism.
  • The fascination with celebrity is represented by the image of Marilyn.
  • The banana image represents music and Warhol. It was designed specifically to grace the cover of Velvet Undergrounds album, who were produced by Andy himself. It is said to be ‘sexual yet starting to rot’ which reflects the 60s with its increased sexuality and ultimately sexually transmitted diseases.

The design also features the TATE logo and a mock up barcode. The background colour is black to create contrast and allow the badge designs to stand out.

Video presented to class as a companion piece to the written essay.

I decided the video technique was an appropriate option for presenting to a visual class in order to engage and interest them, and to show an individual approach.

Essay: Western Culture & Pop Art

Introduction:

There are few eras in history that evoke such diverse and conflicting images. Picture the Sixties and it will rarely fail to conjure up recollections of outrageous behaviour, rebellion, and social experimentation.
No other decade in the 20th century was so tumultuous.

Early on, the western world seemed to be overwhelmed by colour and optimism. An end to post-war hardship was followed by what appeared to be a period of prosperity, which unsurprisingly led to an enormous increase in mass consumerism.

But it was not to last. The economic boom turned out to be an illusion. It was a decade of optimism, but also of protest and, ultimately, disillusion.

Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 — February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It is the largest museum in the United States of America dedicated to a single artist.

Feature Artist: Roy Fox Lichtenstein | Pop Art

.
Pop Arts king of cool, irony and humour; Lichtenstein.
He’s known as the connoisseur of the comic strip, and a master of irony. A man who many view as one of the most significant and influential artists of his generation.

Random Facts:

  • He fought in the second World War.
  • He worked as an art teacher.
  • He made some half-hearted attempts at Abstract expressionism before he found his style.

His big moment (1961): The story goes that one day his young son challenged him to draw something as good as a cartoon. He had previously attempted characters using an abstract expressionism effect, with poor results. He came up with the idea of painting cartoon characters…. exactly as they appeared. It was start of his extremely successful career.
